Summary

Fixes #128

Targets v12 (#40). v12 still has this bug.

auto-events.js only sends an event when both window[saGlobal] and window[saGlobal + "_loaded"] exist. The main script names the event function after the namespace (for example ba_event), but it only ever set sa_event_loaded and <namespace>_loaded. So ba_event_loaded was never set and automated events never fired.

The main script now also sets window[eventFunctionName + "_loaded"] right after it installs the event function. The existing sa_event_loaded line stays, so default sites behave exactly as before. I fixed the main script rather than auto-events.js, so cached or self-hosted copies of auto-events.js work too.

Following v12's AGENTS.md, the rebuilt dist/latest and dist/v12 event builds are committed. light.js, auto-events.js and dist/v1–dist/v11 are unchanged. #127 (8f8f885) was never rebuilt into dist, so these files also include its "sc" → "scre" change.

Size: +18 bytes minified and +4 to +9 bytes gzip (gzip -9 -n) on each event build, e.g. latest.js goes from 9171→9189 minified and 4610→4614 gzip. 0 on light.js and auto-events.js.

Effect on customers: default installations send exactly the same requests. Sites using automated events with a custom namespace or sa-global (and data-sa-global on the auto-events tag, as the docs describe) were sending no automated events. They will now get outbound, download, email and phone events under the usual names.

Testing

  • pnpm run test:unit: 56 passing, including two new cases (namespace: "ba" with auto-events data-sa-global="ba_event", and saGlobal: "my_event"). Both fail on the origin/v12 build.
  • test:deploy (15), test:matrix and typecheck pass. Prettier is clean on the changed source and test.
  • A fresh build of this commit matches the committed dist files byte for byte (apart from header dates in untouched files, which aren't committed). The ES5 check passes.
  • Headless Chrome, clicking an outbound link:
Setup Before After
Default pageview + outbound_example_org same
data-namespace="ba" + auto-events data-sa-global="ba_event" pageview only (ba_event is not defined) pageview + outbound_example_org
Main data-sa-global="my_event" + auto-events my_event no automated event pageview + outbound_example_org
  • BrowserStack runs in CI.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in src/default.js: After installing defaultEventFunc as the event handler, the script now sets the corresponding <eventFunctionName>_loaded global flag to true.
  • observed — Modified behavior in test/unit/auto-events.test.js: The imports add createTrackerDOM and runInContext; the existing readFileSync and runInNewContext imports remain available.
  • observed — Modified behavior in test/unit/auto-events.test.js: Adds a test for each of the namespace and saGlobal settings. Each configures autoCollect: false, loads auto-events.js in the DOM's VM context with the corresponding data-sa-global value, invokes outbound-link tracking, and expects the sent request's event parameter to be outbound_example_org.

Explanation

Issue #128 requires automated outbound, download, and email events to work with a custom namespace or custom data-sa-global. src/default.js now sets window[eventFunctionName + "_loaded"] after installing the configured event function. The new unit tests cover both namespace and saGlobal configurations and verify the outbound event request. The reported test and browser checks support the required behavior.

Documentation update

_docs/55_events/05_automated-events.md

Location: After the ## Script section (the settings example), before ## Demo of the script

Copy and paste this into the documentation repository:

## Custom namespace or global

If you changed the `sa_event` function with [`data-namespace`](/events#the-variable-sa_event-is-already-used) or `data-sa-global` on the main script, you also need to tell the automated events script which global to call. Use `data-sa-global` with the full function name, so a namespace of `ba` becomes `ba_event`:

<!-- prettier-ignore -->
```html
<script async data-namespace="ba" src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"></script>
<script
  async
  data-sa-global="ba_event"
  src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/auto-events.js"></script>
```

Without `data-sa-global` the automated events script keeps looking for `sa_event`, it logs `sa_event is not defined` in the console, and no automated events are collected.

Synchronize auto-events with the configured event global.

src/default.js accepts a custom data-sa-global, but src/auto-events.js reads its own data-saGlobal and defaults to sa_event. If only the main script is configured with ba_event, the main script creates window.ba_event and window.ba_event_loaded, while auto-events checks window.sa_event and window.sa_event_loaded. The check fails, so automated-link events are skipped.

Make src/auto-events.js resolve the same configured global as the main script. Setting only the custom _loaded flag in src/default.js does not resolve this mismatch.

Re CodeRabbit "Synchronize auto-events with the configured event global": I kept this PR to the existing contract. auto-events.js already reads its own data-sa-global (documented in the plugin settings at https://docs.simpleanalytics.com/create-plugin), and the docs PR simpleanalytics/docs#58 adds data-sa-global="ba_event" to the automated events and namespace docs. Before this fix, even a correctly configured auto-events tag (data-sa-global="ba_event") never fired, because ba_event_loaded was never set. That is the bug fixed here; verified in headless Chrome (see the PR description).

Making auto-events.js detect the main script's namespace on its own would couple the two scripts (finding the other tag or reading sa_settings, with load-order issues). That is more complexity than this rare setup needs, so I left it out.

Automated events wait for window[saGlobal + "_loaded"], but the main
script only set sa_event_loaded and the namespace flag. With a custom
namespace or sa-global (for example ba_event), automated events never
fired. Set the flag for the configured event function once it replaces
the queue stub, and cover both setups in the unit tests.

Rebuild the affected event-enabled distributions (+18 bytes minified,
+4 to +9 bytes gzip). light.js and auto-events.js are unchanged. The
rebuilt files also include the src change from #127, which had not
been rebuilt into dist yet.
