Moves the plugin to Laravel Debugbar 4 (now fruitcake/laravel-debugbar). Debugbar 4 supports Laravel 11, 12 and 13, so the plugin can run on Winter 1.3 with Laravel 12 or 13. Debugbar 3 stops at Laravel 12.

  • composer.json: barryvdh/laravel-debugbar ^3.15 → fruitcake/laravel-debugbar ^4.2, and PHP >=8.2 to match Debugbar 4.
  • Namespaces updated from Barryvdh\Debugbar to Fruitcake\LaravelDebugbar.
  • Debugbar 4 dropped its InjectDebugbar middleware and now handles every response from a RequestHandled listener, with no permission check. Our middleware handles the response itself, and only for users who may see the bar. If a user may only store requests, the request is stored without sending any debug headers. For everyone else, and for responses that never reach our middleware (like the maintenance page), the bar is disabled, so Debugbar's listener leaves them alone. The try/catch stays, so error pages still get the bar.
  • Removed the SymfonyHttpDriver wiring and our JavascriptRenderer subclass. Debugbar 4 sets up its own HTTP driver, and Winter's stylesheet is now added with the renderer's addAssets().
  • Collectors got the return types that php-debugbar 3 requires, and use getDataFormatter()->formatVar() since formatVar() is no longer on the collector.
  • The models and route collector toggles moved to register(). Debugbar 4 registers its collectors before the plugin boots, so setting them in boot() did nothing.
  • Bound Illuminate\Log\Logger to the default log channel. Debugbar 4's log collectors type-hint Logger, but Storm aliases that class to the log service, which is a LogManager, so they threw a TypeError.

Winter 1.2 installs stay on the current 4.0.x releases, since Debugbar 4 needs Laravel 11+.

Related: wintercms/storm#246 and wintercms/winter#1546 add Laravel 13 support to Storm and Winter.

IMPORTANT THINGS:

  1. This works with Laravel 12 or 13 (WinterCMS 1.3). It does NOT work with Laravel 9.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Debugbar output now respects separate permissions for viewing and storing diagnostic data, including configuration overrides.
    • Requests where Debugbar was not injected no longer leave it enabled, and storage is disabled when access is not permitted.
    • Model, route, and Twig profiling collectors are handled more consistently across supported configurations.
    • Collector details are formatted consistently, improving the presentation of non-scalar page and component data.
  • Improvements
    • Winter’s Debugbar stylesheet continues to be included in the rendered toolbar.

Walkthrough

This pull request migrates the Winter Debugbar plugin from Barryvdh Laravel Debugbar to Fruitcake Laravel Debugbar and raises the minimum PHP version to 8.2. It updates plugin registration, the service provider, and middleware to use the new package namespaces and APIs. The custom JavascriptRenderer subclass is removed, and WinterDebugbar registers its CSS through the renderer asset API. Collector methods gain explicit return types, and CMS and component collectors use the data formatter.

Update dont-discover to match the new package name.

The auto-discovery exclusion still references barryvdh/laravel-debugbar, but the package is now fruitcake/laravel-debugbar. This should be updated for consistency and to ensure discovery is properly disabled for the correct package.

barryvdh/laravel-debugbar v4.x resolves correctly; switching to fruitcake/laravel-debugbar is optional

  • composer.json still requires barryvdh/laravel-debugbar:^4.2 and extra.laravel.dont-discover excludes barryvdh/laravel-debugbar (composer.json:28, 36-38).
  • composer.lock shows Composer installs barryvdh/laravel-debugbar v4.2.x while sourcing code from the fruitcake/laravel-debugbar repository, so this should not break dependency resolution.
  • Updating both the require entry and the dont-discover entry to fruitcake/laravel-debugbar is a consistency/forward-compat improvement, but not required to fix installs.

Prevent debug headers for denied users.

When allow_public_access is false, a user without winter.debugbar.access_debugbar can reach LaravelDebugbar::handleResponse(). Setting debugbar.inject to false blocks only the HTML toolbar. Fruitcake calls sendDataInHeaders(true) first. If the user also lacks winter.debugbar.access_stored_requests, the middleware sets storage to null, so php-debugbar sends the collected dataset in phpdebugbar response headers.

Gate the shared response handler. Collect data without modifying the response, and mark it handled so the later RequestHandled listener does not process it again.

@austinderrick austinderrick changed the title Support Laravel Debugbar 4 (Laravel 13) Support Laravel Debugbar 4 Sep 24, 2026
Move to fruitcake/laravel-debugbar ^4.2, which supports Laravel 11, 12 and 13 on PHP 8.2+.

- Update namespaces from Barryvdh\Debugbar to Fruitcake\LaravelDebugbar.
- Debugbar 4 injects from a RequestHandled listener, so InjectDebugbar handles the response itself
and only for users allowed to see the bar. Store-only requests are collected without response
headers, and the bar is disabled for every other request, including responses that never reach
  the middleware.
- Drop the SymfonyHttpDriver wiring and the JavascriptRenderer subclass; add Winter's stylesheet
  with the renderer's addAssets().
- Add the return types php-debugbar 3 requires and use getDataFormatter()->formatVar().
- Turn off the models and route collectors in register(), since Debugbar 4 registers collectors
  before the plugin boots.
- Bind Illuminate\Log\Logger to the default log channel; Storm aliases it to the LogManager.
