Currently, role assignment for groups are not supported.
This was hard in old project-user definition because they're tied as nested lists.
Decoupled definition of projects and users and added group definition.
Created separate user, group and role assignment tasks.
To keep the compatibility for old project-user definitions, the original users.yml was renamed to project_users.yml. This task only runs when a project has users and user_domain defined (Old format).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for configuring groups and users, including group membership and default project assignments.
    • Groups can be created with a name and description.
    • Assign project and domain roles to configured users and groups.
    • Existing project-scoped user configurations remain supported for compatibility.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The role adds global group and user inputs, provisions groups and users, and assigns users and groups to project and domain roles. It also retains project-scoped user creation and role assignment for projects that define users and a user domain.

Changes

Identity management

Layer / File(s) Summary
Global group and user provisioning
roles/os_projects/defaults/main.yml, roles/os_projects/tasks/groups.yml, roles/os_projects/tasks/users.yml, roles/os_projects/tasks/projects.yml
The defaults define global group and user inputs. Tasks create configured groups and users, add users to groups, and iterate over the global input lists.
Project-scoped user processing
roles/os_projects/tasks/project_users.yml, roles/os_projects/tasks/projects.yml
Projects that define both users and user_domain include tasks to create users and assign their project and domain roles.
Project and domain role assignments
roles/os_projects/defaults/main.yml, roles/os_projects/tasks/role_assignment.yml, roles/os_projects/tasks/projects.yml
Project documentation adds group membership and role fields. The role assignment tasks process project and domain roles for configured users and groups. The project task includes these assignments when users or groups are defined.

The new group and user features fail for ordinary configurations. Domain role assignments for users and groups do not run, and the group domain-role task targets a user instead of the group. Users or groups that omit documented optional fields cannot be created. Group-only roles are not created before they are assigned. These defects should be fixed before merging.

Generate openrc_file for global users.

If a user is defined only in os_projects_users, the template task in roles/os_projects/tasks/projects.yml does not visit that user. The documented openrc_file is therefore not created. Add a template task for global users, or remove this field from the global-user contract.

Omit description when it is absent.

A group containing only the documented required fields has no group.description. Ansible fails to template this task before it can create the group. Use group.description | default(omit). (docs.ansible.com)

Create configured group roles before assigning them.

This include now processes projects that define only groups. The preceding all_roles calculation collects roles only from project.users. On a fresh cloud, a role defined only under a project's group is not created before its assignment is attempted. Include project-group roles and domain_roles in all_roles.

Fix the domain lookup for user domain roles.

with_subelements sets item to a list: [user, role]. item.domain is undefined on this list. Ansible fails when it evaluates domain_is_id and the label. Line 34 also reads project.user_domain. This task handles the new format, where project.user_domain is not set, so the os_projects_domain_to_id[...] lookup also fails. Read the domain from the user entry. Fall back to the project value.

Assign the group domain roles to the group, not to a user.

Line 78 passes user: with a group name. The task then targets a user with the same name as the group, or it fails. Line 79 reads project.user_domain, but the defaults put the domain on each group (group.domain). Lines 88 and 90 read item.domain from the [group, role] list, and that value is undefined. Use group: and item.0.domain. The group_domain_id expression in roles/os_projects/tasks/groups.yml (Lines 2-18) already gets the group domain ID this way.

Omit an unspecified default_project.

The global-user schema makes default_project optional. A user without that field fails while Ansible templates this argument, before identity_user can create the user. Use user.default_project | default(omit). (docs.ansible.com)

Give the optional group loop an empty default.

If user.groups is absent, Ansible must evaluate with_items before the per-item when condition can skip an assignment. The documented group-free user then fails at this task. Iterate over user.groups | default([]) instead. (docs.ansible.com)
