These backports merged unintentionally during the freeze between 3.15.0rc3 and 3.15.0. They should not be included in 3.15.0; they can be reconsidered for 3.15.1 after the release. Revert the 14 backports with code or build changes that I merged on 5 October, with one commit per revert, so they can be restored individually after the release.
Reverts #158870, #158852, #158853, #158844, #158851, #158850, #158845, #156814, #158832, #158831, #158691, #158830, #158829, #158813.
Keep the docs-only change #158855 and test-only change #158817. The docstring change #158805 from 4 October also remains in place.
