Android FOSS catalog showing search, trust filters, and app cards

Why use Android FOSS?

  • Search the full catalog by app name, package ID, category, or source host.
  • Jump straight to source code and cataloged F-Droid or IzzyOnDroid packages.
  • Filter published anti-feature, permission, update, and reproducible-build metadata.
  • Sort by signal coverage, source activity, popularity, name, or category.

How to read the catalog

Store metadata and repository activity can help you narrow a long list. They cannot prove that an app is safe or private. Review source, permissions, release notes, and signing details before installing anything important.

Caution

Free and open-source Android is under threat. New developer verification rules can restrict ordinary sideloading and third-party store installs. Read the current guidance and Keep Android Open.

Android developer verification

Google's Android developer verification requirements affect certified Android devices, including apps installed outside Google Play. Current Android guidance says regional enforcement starts on September 30, 2026 for Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, then expands globally in 2027 and beyond. Google says unregistered apps can still be installed with ADB or an advanced flow, but ordinary sideloading and third-party store installs can face new verification gates.

For FOSS users, prefer entries with source links, F-Droid or IzzyOnDroid package links, current update metadata, and clear upstream signing or release notes. F-Droid has publicly opposed mandatory developer registration, so availability and install prompts may differ by region, device certification state, store registration status, and Android version. Keep a tested backup install path for critical apps before travelling into affected regions or updating a primary device.

The modular catalog mark is the approved Android FOSS identity. The untouched master and original concept archive are kept in the repository, with the chosen direction recorded in selection.json. The archive also includes the supporting product composition and the alternate directions reviewed during development.

Local validation

Run python catalog_check.py before submitting catalog edits. It validates app entry markup, F-Droid and IzzyOnDroid package URL formats, store-link order, and duplicate package identities with line-numbered errors.

Run python source_health.py when reviewing maintenance health. It reports archived, moved, stale, missing, active, and rate-limited source URLs with README line numbers without editing the catalog. bash check.sh runs the structural catalog checker, and bash check_manually.sh runs the source-health report. Run python -m unittest test_source_health.py for the offline source-health classifier tests.

Run python trust_metadata.py to refresh catalog-trust.json from the F-Droid and IzzyOnDroid indexes. The browser view loads that sidecar when present and displays store, anti-feature, sensitive-permission, update, source-archive, and optional reproducible-build indicators on app cards.

Run python contributor_check.py before submitting README catalog changes. It checks changed entries for absolute source URLs, local trust metadata, blocked anti-features, license/update evidence, and live source-health signals.

Run python catalog_export.py to refresh catalog.json, a deterministic machine-readable sidecar with each entry's name, category, source URL, source host, store links, package IDs, and README line number. The browser uses this file as its primary catalog and joins it with the optional trust and popularity sidecars.

Run python identity_check.py to report duplicate names, duplicate source URLs, duplicate package IDs, and likely fork variants for maintainer review.

Run python popularity_metadata.py to refresh catalog-popularity.json, an optional GitHub discovery sidecar with source stars, source update dates, and latest release dates. These values are advisory discovery signals, not quality or safety guarantees.

Run python -m unittest for the offline test suite. It checks the catalog tools and the browser's data totals, local assets, icons, version strings, manifest, and public copy. Run python build_release.py to create the versioned static-site ZIP and SHA256 file in dist/.
