Summary

connectNativeWatch used to re-list on every reconnect. Ordinary reconnects now resume the WATCH from a checkpoint. Expiry and anything untrustworthy still recover through a fresh, complete snapshot.

  • Checkpoint ownership. The checkpoint is private to one connection handle and is never exposed, accepted from a caller or shared. That ties it to the handle's proxy, scope, selectors and credentials. There is no new public API.

  • Arming. The checkpoint is set only after a complete snapshot: the LIST is applied, the WATCH is accepted and synced is consumed. An interrupted initialization leaves no checkpoint, so the next connection LISTs again.

  • Advancing. It moves only after the consumer has applied an event (ADDED, MODIFIED, DELETED) or the stream passes a bookmark. Every WATCH now requests allowWatchBookmarks=true, which is a reserved parameter. Bookmarks move only the checkpoint, never an object's write version. resourceVersions are opaque: they are never compared or parsed.

  • Resume. These keep the checkpoint and resume: EOF, network failure, a truncated final frame, and HTTP or in-stream 408, 429 or 5xx. A resumed connection sends no LIST, reset or synced, so membership, drafts and conflicts survive. Missed updates, deletes, selector exits and same-name UID replacements arrive as watch events. The state goes connecting → live once the resumed watch is accepted.

  • Recovery. These discard the checkpoint and lead to a fresh LIST/WATCH snapshot:

    • HTTP or in-stream 410 (Expired/Gone)
    • malformed frames
    • an in-stream error without a code
    • an event without a resourceVersion

During recovery the state is never live, so editors refuse to save.

  • Unchanged: terminal 401, 403 and other 4xx (also on resumed watches), the bounded retry budget and retry hints, cancellation, callback-error cleanup and the pagination refusal.

Streaming-list initialization and pagination are evaluated in proposal 0006 §3 but not implemented.

Validation

  • task lint and task test: client 243/243, plus the Go and Vue suites.
  • New fake-fetch cases in native.test.ts:
    • missed updates, deletes, selector exits and UID replacement replayed on resume
    • bookmarks and opaque resourceVersions
    • split and truncated frames, and malformed input
    • interrupted initialization
    • HTTP and in-stream expiry, and repeated expiry until the retry budget is exhausted
    • terminal and transient refusals on a resumed watch
    • cancellation and separate checkpoints per handle
    • drafts and conflicts across a resume and across a re-list
  • native-editing.test.ts: a save returns recovering during expiry recovery.
  • task e2e-browser, Chromium on both entry points (index and bundle): the viewer and editor pages go through a resume, a replayed delete, an in-stream 410 and a re-list. A draft survives the resume, and Save stays disabled during recovery.
  • task test-real-api on v1.36.4+k3s1 runs the new TestRealAPINativeResumeThroughHostProxy:
    • The host proxy drops the watch and holds the next one while the test mutates the cluster.
    • The browser converges with no second LIST and no reset, and a draft is saved afterwards.
    • The proxy then rewrites a WATCH's resourceVersion to 1. The real API server answers with its own in-stream 410 (HTTP 200 plus an ERROR frame), and the connector recovers through a fresh snapshot, twice in a row.
    • The expiry is induced by the proxy; the 410 is the server's.

Known limits

  • A resumed watch is live as soon as it is accepted. An expired one is therefore briefly live until its in-stream 410 arrives; after that it is never live until the new snapshot completes.
  • A resume does not invalidate a guarded read the way a snapshot does. Any event for that object still invalidates it, as on a live watch.
  • The checkpoint is held in memory, so a page reload lists again.
  • Every reconnect still uses the bounded retry budget.

Measurements are in the stacked comparison PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Native viewers now resume interrupted watches from the last applied event, avoiding a fresh snapshot for ordinary reconnects.
    • If watch history has expired or cannot be safely resumed, the viewer fetches a fresh snapshot. Native editors retain drafts and conflicts during recovery, with saving disabled until the watch is accepted.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guides and examples to explain reconnect behavior, recovery states, and the cases that require a fresh snapshot.

connectNativeWatch no longer re-lists on every reconnect. After a complete
snapshot (LIST applied, WATCH accepted, synced consumed) each handle keeps a
private checkpoint: the resourceVersion of the last event its consumer
applied, or of the last bookmark. An EOF, network failure, truncated final
frame or retryable refusal (408/429/5xx, HTTP or in-stream) resumes the WATCH
from it with the same URL and selectors: no LIST, no reset, no synced, and
the state goes connecting -> live on acceptance, so the store keeps
membership, drafts and conflicts and receives missed changes as events.

HTTP/in-stream 410 (or reason Expired/Gone), malformed frames, an in-stream
error without a code, an event without a resourceVersion and terminal
refusals discard the checkpoint; the next connection is a fresh LIST/WATCH
snapshot within the bounded retry budget. An initialization interrupted
before synced leaves no checkpoint. Every WATCH requests
allowWatchBookmarks=true, now a reserved query parameter. Resource versions
stay opaque and are never compared.

Tests: fake-fetch resume, bookmark, opaque-RV, truncation, malformed,
interrupted-initialization, expiry, terminal, transient, cancellation,
per-handle and draft/conflict cases; native editor refusal during expiry
recovery; Chromium viewer/editor resume and in-stream 410; and
TestRealAPINativeResumeThroughHostProxy, whose host proxy drops, holds and
expires watches (the expiry is induced by rewriting resourceVersion to 1; the
410 is the real API server's in-stream answer).

Walkthrough

Native WATCH connections now resume from a per-handle checkpoint after ordinary interruptions. Expired history and invalid watch input clear the checkpoint and trigger a fresh snapshot. Tests and documentation cover event replay, recovery, and draft retention.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6adc4

Native watches now resume after interruptions instead of re-listing. The remaining items are minor: two documents give an incomplete list of re-list conditions, and one browser test can fail intermittently because of timing. The change is mergeable with small follow-ups.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6adc4

Watch resumption changes recovery and editing readiness, but the inspected paths preserve ordered event application, terminal authorization failures, and conditional-write protections. Correct isolation still depends on hosts replacing connections and stores when identity changes.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A handle's data exposure is bounded by its selected native collection and the host proxy's effective authority, potentially covering cluster-wide resources and Secrets. Private checkpoints prevent cross-handle checkpoint sharing but are not an authorization or redaction boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Identity isolation remains a host lifecycle obligation: requests read current options and browser credentials rather than an immutable identity snapshot. Existing documentation requires a new handle after credential changes and separate stores per source, scope, and login identity; the inspected code does not enforce those host transitions.
  • observed — The editor refuses new saves while not live. Once live, PATCH carries captured UID and resourceVersion preconditions, so accepted resumption is not permission to overwrite a stale version or a same-name replacement. HTTP and in-stream 401/403 remain terminal.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Malformed input, expiry, and unclassifiable stream errors invalidate the resume position. EOF, network interruption, transient refusals, and an unapplied truncated final frame retain the trusted checkpoint. Both paths use the existing bounded retry policy and cancellation cleanup.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Hosts with mutable sessions could make identity changes explicitly close the old handle and replace its store together, optionally using a host-owned identity epoch to reject stale callbacks. This would reinforce the existing identity-isolation contract, not remedy an established PR-introduced finding.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Wait for Host to record the replacement WATCH.

The page can show syncing before the replacement WATCH reaches Host. This one-time assertion can then fail because the final watch@2 is not recorded yet. Poll the collection calls before checking that recovery made no object requests. Playwright supports expect.poll for asynchronous values. (playwright.dev)

Proposed change
-  expect(host.collectionCalls()).toEqual(["list", "watch@1", "watch@1", "watch@2", "list", "watch@2"]);
+  await expect.poll(() => host.collectionCalls()).toEqual(["list", "watch@1", "watch@1", "watch@2", "list", "watch@2"]);

Based on learnings, retrying Playwright assertions avoid timing-dependent test failures.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

State every condition that makes a native reconnect list again. Two summary documents say that "only an expired history lists again". native.ts also discards the checkpoint and runs a fresh LIST in three more cases: after a malformed frame, after an in-stream ERROR without a code, and after an event or bookmark without a resourceVersion. packages/krm-stream/README.md documents all of these cases correctly.

  • README.md#L58-L58: replace "only an expired history lists again" with "expired history or malformed watch input lists again".
  • docs/adopting.md#L14-L15: replace "only an expired history lists again" with the same wording as README.md.
